Eagles Impressive at the Oregon Classic!!

Congratulations to the Eagle Point Eagles for their gutsy performance at the 2010 Oregon Classic where they finished in third place overall. After four dominating performances over #8 ranked Madras, Silverton, and #9 ranked Pendleton, and #6 ranked Thurston, the Eagles ran into the 3-time defending state champion Hermiston, and saw their hopes of an Oregon Classic championship come to an end.

Up next for the Eagles in the 3rd place match was #3 ranked Hillsboro, who had upset #2 ranked Churchill earlier in the tournament. The dual began at 140 lbs and continued with the Eagles winning the first six weight classes, which looked identical to the Eagle’s first four duals of the tournament. Hillsboro, however won the next three matches and began to mount a comeback of sorts, and the coaching staff knew we needed something big to secure the victory.

In one of the most memorable performances of the tournament, Dallas Compton (119) showed us why he belongs in the sport of wrestling. During his match against Hermiston, he was slammed hard onto the mat, getting the wind knocked out of him severely and possibly injuring a rib. Dallas had to be carried off of the mat and it did not look as though he would be able to compete in the third place match against Hillsboro. The coaching staff had decided we would forfeit the weight, but Dallas thought otherwise and stepped out onto the mat at less than 100%. As the match began, Dallas fell behind and looked to be in trouble against his much larger opponent. Down at least 6-0, Dallas began wrestling on pure heart and attacked his opponent relentlessly. During a scramble from their feet, Dallas caught the Hillsboro wrestler on his back for near fall, but was unable to hold him there for long. Without hesitation, Dallas immediately turned his opponent in an armbar and secured the fall, which sealed the victory for the Eagles. Great Job Dallas!!

Turning in outstanding undefeated records for the weekend were Chris Wilson (145), Johnny Wilkerson (171), Steven Josephson (189). Trent Kaiser (140), Jake Gallo (145-152), and Gage Baumer (160) also turned in notable performances, going 5-1 during the two-day tournament. From top to bottom, there were many noteworthy highlights this weekend from Trent Kaiser pinning Madras’s #1 ranked wrestler, Jake Gallo pinning Madras’s #2 ranked wrestler, to Travis Woods fighting tooth and nail against the 2-time defending state champion from Hillsboro. Great Job Boys!!

The Eagles showed tremendous resilience this weekend, solidifying what the coaching staff has believed all along; Eagle Point wrestling is for real! The ability to bounce back from defeat is one of the most difficult aspects of wrestling to overcome, and the Eagles have been battling with this for years. The Eagles learned this weekend that anything is possible if you approach a challenge with determination and a purpose. As we move toward February, let’s keep the ball rolling and begin working harder than ever, focusing on our one purpose; to bring a State Championship back to Eagle Point!!! Go Eagles!!

Next up for the Eagles this Thursday; the Crater Comets…….
