Dan Gable- Haunting
In 1970 at 142lbs, Larry Owings upset Dan Gable in the NCAAs. It was Gable's only loss in High School and College. This loss still haunts Dan Gable today even though he says it helped him to be a world champion and Olympic Champion.
Coach Gable reinforces what we have talked about all season: Work hard and believe in your abilities, never underestimating your competition. We have a great opportunity to do big things this weekend, and if we believe in ourselves and our program, we will bring home a trophy!!
Let's get our game faces on and head to Portland with one mission: Give Hermiston all they can handle!!

What it means to "Go Hard"!!
Attention Wrestlers:
If you've ever wondered why the coaching staff has gotten on your case about not working hard enough, watch this video and compare your intensity level with these guys. It's easy to become content with your work ethic, believing or thinking that you're working hard, but intensity truly produces results! Watch the University of Iowa working short-time situations where both guys have to score with very little time left. Pay close attention to the sense of urgency these guys have. It's fun to watch!!

Eagles win the 2010 Eagle Point Invitational
EAGLE POINT — Already with a wrestling dual-meet victory over third-ranked Hillsboro, Eagle Point added another feather in its cap Saturday afternoon en route to the team championship in the 19-school Eagle Point Invitational.
The fifth-ranked Eagles landed a pair of champions in Aaron Lorenz and Steven Josephson and had three others place second to boost the host team to 2271/2 points — just 31/2 points more than runner-up and No. 2-ranked Churchill. Ben Zomerdyk, Trent Kaiser, and Gage Baumer all had great days; however, each them were defeated in the finals.
North Medford, ranked fifth among 6A teams, finished third with 186 points. Henley (1781/2), Grants Pass (154), Marshfield (132) and Phoenix (1241/2) rounded out the top seven teams.
"We're still not at full strength with our lineup," said Eagle Point head coach Kacey McNulty. "We're at that point of the season where you're holding out kids because of match limits. Missing some varsity kids and still being able to pull out a win was nice."
Lorenz scored the first championship of the night, pinning North Medford's Chris McFall in 2 minutes, 37 seconds at 103 pounds.
"Aaron Lorenz wrestled a great tournament," added McNulty.
Josephson's title came at 171, where he used an early advantage to edge Cory Haggans of North Medford, 10-7, in one of the marquee finals matchups.
"It was a good match," said McNulty. "Haggans is a tough kid and Josephson ended up with some back points early, which changed what Josephson did and what Haggans had to do to catch up."
Eagle Point's Ben Zomerdyk (130), Trent Kaiser (135) and Gage Baumer (160) finished second, while teammate Jake Gallo (145) placed third.
Ben Zomerdyk and Gage Baumer registered impressive victories in the semi-finals over opponents who had previously beaten them. Ben scored a late take down and earned the fall over Luke Collins of Grants Pass in what may have been Ben’s best match this season. Gage Baumer kept himself in the match against the explosive Jose Cruz from Grants Pass. While defending a second period takedown, Gage was able to set-up and score a tight head and arm that Cruz could not get away from. Gage was able to secure the fall with 1 second left in the second period.
TEAM SCORES — Eagle Point 227.5, Churchill 224, North Medford 186, Henley 178.5, Grants Pass 154, Marshfield 132, Phoenix 124.5, Lassen 123, Klamath Union 95, Corvallis 79, Brookings-Harbor 78, Mazama 71, South Medford 65.5, South Umpqua 64, Rogue River 56, North Eugene 45, Del Norte 37, Weed 16, Etna 8.

EP vs. Crater & Ashland Tonight!!!
Attention Parents and Fans:
Tonight, the 5th ranked Eagles will travel to archrival, Crater High in a battle of Southern Sky Conference powerhouses. The Eagles, coming off their impressive performance at the Oregon Classic last weekend, look to walk away from Crater High School with a victory tonight against the always tough Crater Comets. Junior Varsity will begin at 5:45 pm and Varsity at 7pm.
Also, due to a scheduling mix-up last week, Ashland will be joining the Eagles at Crater High School for a SSC match against a team made up of Eagle Point 2nd varsity wrestlers. The young Eagles will once again have a chance to prove they belong among the varsity-level wrestlers from other high schools in the state.
We hope everyone will come out tonight and show their support for Eagle Point. It should be a great match…. We look forward to seeing you all there!!

Eagles Impressive at the Oregon Classic!!
Congratulations to the Eagle Point Eagles for their gutsy performance at the 2010 Oregon Classic where they finished in third place overall. After four dominating performances over #8 ranked Madras, Silverton, and #9 ranked Pendleton, and #6 ranked Thurston, the Eagles ran into the 3-time defending state champion Hermiston, and saw their hopes of an Oregon Classic championship come to an end.
Up next for the Eagles in the 3rd place match was #3 ranked Hillsboro, who had upset #2 ranked Churchill earlier in the tournament. The dual began at 140 lbs and continued with the Eagles winning the first six weight classes, which looked identical to the Eagle’s first four duals of the tournament. Hillsboro, however won the next three matches and began to mount a comeback of sorts, and the coaching staff knew we needed something big to secure the victory.
In one of the most memorable performances of the tournament, Dallas Compton (119) showed us why he belongs in the sport of wrestling. During his match against Hermiston, he was slammed hard onto the mat, getting the wind knocked out of him severely and possibly injuring a rib. Dallas had to be carried off of the mat and it did not look as though he would be able to compete in the third place match against Hillsboro. The coaching staff had decided we would forfeit the weight, but Dallas thought otherwise and stepped out onto the mat at less than 100%. As the match began, Dallas fell behind and looked to be in trouble against his much larger opponent. Down at least 6-0, Dallas began wrestling on pure heart and attacked his opponent relentlessly. During a scramble from their feet, Dallas caught the Hillsboro wrestler on his back for near fall, but was unable to hold him there for long. Without hesitation, Dallas immediately turned his opponent in an armbar and secured the fall, which sealed the victory for the Eagles. Great Job Dallas!!
Turning in outstanding undefeated records for the weekend were Chris Wilson (145), Johnny Wilkerson (171), Steven Josephson (189). Trent Kaiser (140), Jake Gallo (145-152), and Gage Baumer (160) also turned in notable performances, going 5-1 during the two-day tournament. From top to bottom, there were many noteworthy highlights this weekend from Trent Kaiser pinning Madras’s #1 ranked wrestler, Jake Gallo pinning Madras’s #2 ranked wrestler, to Travis Woods fighting tooth and nail against the 2-time defending state champion from Hillsboro. Great Job Boys!!
The Eagles showed tremendous resilience this weekend, solidifying what the coaching staff has believed all along; Eagle Point wrestling is for real! The ability to bounce back from defeat is one of the most difficult aspects of wrestling to overcome, and the Eagles have been battling with this for years. The Eagles learned this weekend that anything is possible if you approach a challenge with determination and a purpose. As we move toward February, let’s keep the ball rolling and begin working harder than ever, focusing on our one purpose; to bring a State Championship back to Eagle Point!!! Go Eagles!!

Video of last night's dual vs. South Medford
Last night, Eagle Point wrestled a very game South Medford team, who came into the dual looking to knock off the Eagles after suffering defeat at the Phoenix Dual Tournament in early December. Entering the dual, the Eagles would be without 6 starters in the varsity line-up, which can normally present trouble for any program. In the end, the Eagles prevailed and showed our wrestling supporters that there is no shortage of depth in the Eagle Point wrestling program. The final score of the dual was Eagle Point 58 South Medford 10.
Also, in our first effort to provide live access to our home matches via the internet, EPHS teacher Joe Dabbs and his video production crew did a great job covering the event.
You can now watch the dual from our homepage at www.eaglepointwrestling.com (make sure to hit the refesh button on your browser to access the link)
As with any first-time effort, some glitches may have occurred, but they will be worked out. So the coaching staff would like to send a huge thank you to Mr. Dabbs and his video production team for helping Eagle Point Wrestling rise to another level!! We look forward to providing Eagle Point Wrestling Fans with access to all future home meets.
